NAIA - Núcleo Assistencial Irmão Alfredo

Núcleo Assistencial Irmão Alfredo - NAIA, is a non-profit organisation founded in 1982 aiming to help and promote the welfare of poor families. It provides inclusive day and after school care for children of 2-12 yrs, assistance to the homeless, a town mission which provides an education centre and vocational workshops for the general community.

Beyond the donation of money, Serasa’s team of volunteers provide a wide range of support for the organisation, often employing their professional skills in creating fundraising plans and campaign management and  event promotion and management as well as renovation work teams and programmed visits.

Bluebell Hill

A consultation exercise with children in a particularly deprived area of Nottingham, asked them what they would change if they could. They were asked to create a ‘wish list’ and some of their responses were very moving:

  • I wish there were less crime because we don’t want our world to go on the news.
  • I wish for no bullying in St Ann’s
  • I wish St Ann’s had no drug dealers
  • I wish for people to stop selling guns and knives
  • I wish for people to stop stealing from children
  • I wish for there to be more police on the streets
  • More open space and more areas to play football
  • I wish for safer parks in St Ann’s so you don’t feed scared when you are on the park
  • I wish there were more activity clubs for young people
  • Get more better parks
  • Safe place to play outside
  • I wish for places in St Ann’s where families for play and have fun
  • More people joining in, keeping watch over each other.
  • I wish for a greener St Ann’s

In response to this, Experian worked with local schools and partnership organisations to come up with a proposal that will help provide safer, local, supervised play spaces.

The project is only in its infancy but is developing the infrastructure and support systems to allow maximum use of school facilities and community areas, renovating current green spaces and involving and engaging parents, teachers and other community groups and members to provide support, facilitated play and supervision.

Community investment

Experian invests in its communities through a programme of volunteering, charitable donations, gifts in kind and partnerships. The value of our investment this year is reflected in the table below (partnerships involve both volunteering and financial donations).

  • Overall our giving has increased. Even without the inclusion of Serasa’s contribution, the combined US and UK investment of funds was up by over $300,000, largely due to capture of more data from our Interactive business in the US.

  • The contribution of US$303,000 from Serasa represents a full year’s funding, consistent with all the other data reported.

  • Volunteering hours were down very slightly in the UK and US.
  • Management costs show a slight reduction; as part of the cost savings being made across the UK business.

  • We made our first donation of $737,000 from Experian Group. This was to replace the funding that in previous years has been donated from the GUS Charitable Trust. These funds were dispersed through the regional businesses and a specific project is highlighted here.

  • We benefited from some final funding that was granted from the GUS Charitable Trust through our UK and US businesses. The Trust has now closed
